Pad Thai
This weekend, after a nice hike with our pups, HK and I took advantage of the fabulous weather (70), and sat on the rooftop deck of one of our fave restaurants for beer and oysters. The moon was in the sky, the sun was about to set, and it was pretty close to perfect. We started talking about restaurants in the ATL, and, having lived in the city for 13 years now, figured we’d like to try something different. So here’s what i’ve come up with. I’m gonna tell you our favorite 10 places to eat in the city, and we would LOVE to hear yours. Here Goes, pretty much in order:
1. Little Bangkok-Thai
2. Panahar-Bangladeshi
3. Penang-Malaysian
4. Mezza-Lebanese
5. Tamarind Seed-Thai
6. Six Feet Under-oysters/po boys
7. Joe’s on Juniper-great patio
8. Tierra-Peruvian influenced
9. Ru San-sushi
10.Mellow Mushroom -pizza/beer
Ok, there you have it. I am not including real fancy or $$$ places that we have been only once or twice-these are the places we frequent. Please let us know your faves in the ATL.Atlanta

You eat much healthier than we do but here are a couple of places we frequent that we can walk to from our condo:

We are crazy about the Georgia Grille on Peachtree. The wonderful staff matches the delicious food. Their smoked chicken chowder is fabulous. It would have to be great to get us that far north almost to Peachtree Battle!
Pasta da Pulcinella is a favorite too. Their Tortelli de Meile is delicious.
I like Top Flr at 674 Myrtle.
Babette’s on Highland is always great.
Alfredo’s on Cheshire Bridge.
The Colonnade on Cheshire Bridge is always a hoot.

I vote for Babette’s Cafe on Highland Ave. by the Carter Center. The owner, Marla, is delightful and a graduate of CIA in Hyde Park, NY. For soup, I love Souper Jenny on Cains Hill Road in Buckhead. Their $12 lunch on Saturdays is a good value. I often get their frozen quarts of soup (on Sat. a gt. is $7) and enjoy at work.

I agree! – 6 Ft.Under is awesome…but been looking for a new oyster place, as we’ve had everything on their menu at least 5 times! Any suggestions?
Can’t just name 10 — too many goods in the ATL!
Cheap but great Eats: Pho 79 (great noodle soups); Cho Dang Tofu House (the barley tea doesn’t sound good, but it is AND good for you…also the best bibimbop (sp?) I’ve had in a while); dim sum at Happy Valley; and my very fav…Hae Woon Dae BBQ — excellent everything and if you’re a Kimchi fan, you’ll like theirs…but it is HOT. Neuvo Laredo – still love the chicken chimi’s; Brickstore Pub in Decatur has the best Brunswick Stew and Brats; 97 Estoria – good bar joint and patio — think you can even bring your pups! Ann’s Snack Bar — amazing burgers, hilarious cook; Atkins Park — good brunch and love their bloody’s!; North Highland Baking Co. for lunch; Rise and Dine near Emory for breakfast (the BEST sweet potato pancakes)! Dekalb County P’Tree Airport restaurant — can’t remember the name, but great turkey sandwiches (they roast their own each day) and fun to sit out and watch the planes come and go….go on a weekday — weekends are packed with kids! Osteria for pizza (still like Fritti, but Osteria is cheaper).
Favorite Sushi joints: Nakato – Cheshire Bridge – sushi chef, Kaki, at the sushi bar is awesome in recommending what’s fresh; Tomo – on Cobb Pkwy. – some of the best I’ve had since my NYC days….but very expensive; and recently we tried Sushi House Hayakawa (Buford Hwy) – very good, but get there early on weekends or you’ll wait in line. MF Sushi in Midtown has creative appetizers, but we find the quality at Nakato just as good and less expensive.
Expensive: – Restaurant Eugene still remains our favorite restaurant in ATL.; Holeman & Finch, (same owner as R.Eugene), a great place for small plates; Kyma if you like a tremendous variety of fresh fish; Nan Thai Fine Dining…everything yummy; Floataway Cafe; Krog Bar — small plates.
Other – Parish Foods — been there for lunch and dinner — great and love their seafood. Not cheap, but reasonable for a nice dinner out. And, the best part? No corkage fee, so bring your own wine! 🙂 Woo hoo!

WOW! thanks everybody! With that, H.K and I have enuf places to try for all of 2009! (we only eat out twice a week). Amy-the only other oyster place that suit our budget was Birdi’s in Decatur, and it closed recently. ; (
am gonna have to save up some $$ (maybe skip a new pair of shoes??) and try some of these places quick, before any more close!

OK so the voting is over. Well I still gotta put in my two cents. Favorites that I feel obliged to mention are Dogwood, Wisteria and (I don’t think I saw anyone toss this one out?????) Metrofresh. Frankly, when we want very healthy and fresh to-go that’s the place for us.
Must also mention that if you get piped into the websites of your favorites restaurants you might get some nice surprises. Ecco just sent me a notice that they’re offering a 2 for 1 entree special. With things so tough out there, they’re certainly one of the places I’d like to see come out the other end. We’re gonna take advantage of this offer for sure.

Soto Soto (south of Ponce on Highland I think) really good
Ted’s Montana Grill on Peachtree
good Bison Burgers and lots more
Dreamland BBQ in Alpharetta – so worth the trip
Blue Ridge Grill on W. Paces near Northside Parkway. Also pricey and very tasty.
Chopstix (in Chastain Square on Roswell) Good Chinese, quiet, great piano player/singer
Tamarind Seed Bistro at Colony Square (fine Thai)

May I recommend Cakes & Ale in Decatur. The food is wonderful and the chef makes a real effort to minimize the restaurant’s carbon footprint.

We recently tried Ethiopian for the first time and loved it! We hit Meskerem at the corner of Briarcliff and Clairmont. If you sign up at http://www.halfoffdepot.com you can buy $25 gift certificates for $12.50. This is a great site for a ton of 1/2 price certificates to some great restaurants!
